Chapter 18

-Rory-

Aside from myself and Evelyn, the only person Rahaela is close with is her boss. The only reason I know that is because after she passed out, I went through her phone and found texts between them—lots of flirty but also lots of serious talks. So, I did the only thing I could and the one thing that pissed Lachlan off more than anything— I called the vampire, told him what happened, and had him come over.

So, now it’s Lachlan, me, Evelyn, and Demetru sitting in the living room trying to figure out what the fuck is going on while Rahaela sleeps on the couch.

“I never told her about my family,” Demetru says quietly, looking directly at Lachlan, “the only thing I said was they were dead, but it was justified. I haven’t hidden the fact my family is known for its savage nature among immortals. She’s aware of how bad I was.”

“Are,” Lachlan snaps, “how bad you are. You still kill people. No use pretending like you don’t.”

Demetru rolls his eyes. “This is the problem with you holier-than-thou Whitelighters. Thousands of years, and you still think vampires can’t evolve. To feed without killing. Christ, this isn’t the 1200s anymore, Lachlan.”

Lachlan growls. “I’m aware. I also know that some of the bloodiest murders the Order has to clean up this year alone are vampires. So, tell me again how you’ve evolved.”

“Alright, boys. How about we both agree that we all need to reevaluate our perception of the other?” I say, reaching over and taking Lachlan’s hand. “You believe after all this time that I can be saved, can change to choose differently than my soul always has. I think we should give Demetru the benefit of the doubt for Rahaela’s sake. If he says he can feed without murder, then we believe him until he proves us wrong. Okay?”

Lachlan’s eyes soften as he stares into mine, his hand coming up to cup the side of my face. “Fine. But that doesn’t help us figure out what demons are rising here in New Orleans. We’re not near a solstice or other cosmic event that they usually go for.”

“So why are they pushing through now?” Demetru is leaning toward Rahaela, running his fingers gently through her hair. “And why Rahaela? There’s people backed into all crevasses of New Orleans. Why pick her out of thousands?”

“The gift?” I say as my brows pull together, already knowing it can’t just be that. New Orleans is no doubt filled with the supernatural, and its rich history just proves it. There’s more humans with supernatural gifts in New Orleans than probably anywhere else in the world.

“Rory?” Rahaela whispers without opening her eyes. “Rory?”

Getting off the loveseat, I let go of Lachlan’s hand and kneel in front of my best friend, reaching out to rest my palm on the side of her head. “I’m here, Hael. I got you.”

“I’m sorry,” she croaks, trying to open her eyes.

“Shhh,” I say, leaning forward to rest my forehead on hers.
